THE DRUM:  3D printing: A gimmick or a game changer?

EUROPE – 3D printing, whereby printers build an object by layering its structure according to a digital file, is more than a gimmick. It is becoming a tool that can aid aeronautics, engineering, construction, recreation, decoration and health and is relevant to just about everyone.

Office supply chain Staples plans to open large city locations in Belgium and the Netherlands during the first quarter of this year, offering 3D printing to the masses.

MASHABLE: Teenager’s search for lost hat touches hearts, goes viral on Facebook

USA – Bridget Hughes’ favorite hat is a standard, brown knitted stocking cap from Gap. It belonged to her mother, who passed away from breast cancer when Hughes was seven years old.  Last week Hughes lost it whilst rushing to change planes at Phoenix after her flight was cancelled.  She posted a note and photo of her wearing the hat which has been shared more than 150,000 times on Facebook with over 8,000 comments. The story has also been picked up by The Los Angeles Times. Although Hughes has still not located the hat, she said: “if I don’t, I will grieve the loss of it, but feel immensely blessed at the same time, and immensely grateful, that so many people cared for me.”  http://mashable.com/2012/11/30/bridget-hughes/

HUFFINGTON POST:  Ann Curry to CNN: Former ‘Today’ host reportedly asked to be released from NBC news contract

USA – Ann Curry has asked NBC News executives to release her from her contract so that she can accept a “high-profile anchor position” at CNN.  A source close to the situation said, “She has formally asked her attorney to explore exit options from the network.
